I posted the January 2010 weather data for the Palmira Arriba Weather Station. The bottom-line is that it was a windy month with the average winds at 10.4 mph and the maximum wind recorded at the station was 34.3 mph. This is common for the month of January. The NE Trade Winds kick up and we get blasted. Friends in the subdistrict of Jaramillo reported very strong winds during the month but unfortunately I don't have data for that area. The Palmira Station recorded 1.68 inches of rain for the month. However, Terry Zak who manually measures the rainfall in El Santuario in the subdistrict of Bajo Boquete reports 5.265 inches of rain for the month with 3.25 of the inches on January 11. That area gets more Bajareque (misting rain coming over the range from the Caribbean) this time of the year than we get on the more southern slope of Baru.
We had several earthquakes this month. They are not related to the terrible disaster that Haiti experienced. The epicenters of our earthquakes were in the more usual location off the Panama Coast in the Pacific on the Panama Costa Rica Border. Toward the end of the month, I will post an article on the web site about earthquakes in our area and how to best monitor them.
Enjoy the dry weather and the attention getting earthquakes. Remember that a little rock-n-roll in Paradise can be a lot of fun!
